12th World Forum for Democracy - Democracy and Diversity - Can we transcend the divides?
In an era marked by growing polarisation, disinformation, and societal divides, a profound reflection on the relationship between democracy and diversity is crucial. While diversity has the potential to strengthen societies through resilience and innovation, it is increasingly weaponised to deepen divides and weaken democratic systems. As elections worldwide amplify socio-economic, gender, and ethnic inequalities, the ability of democracy to embrace and balance differences is being tested.
This pressing challenge was addressed at the 2024 edition of the World Forum for Democracy, themed “Democracy and Diversity: Can we transcend the divides ?” Bringing together participants from across the globe, including alumni of the Schools of Political Studies of the Council of Europe, the forum explored how divisive political narratives and disinformation undermine democratic values, particularly during electoral processes.
The 12th World Forum for Democracy sought innovative approaches and collaborative strategies to address these threats, focusing on the interplay between democracy and diversity. Through insightful discussions and actionable solutions, the forum aimed to reinforce democracy’s capacity to unite societies and uphold fundamental freedoms in a divided world.
